London, July 9 (HS). Serbia's star tennis player Novak Djokovic on Monday defeated Denmark's Holger Rune 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to enter the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the 15th time.
Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, dealt a blow to Rune, reeling off 12 consecutive points to take a 3-0 lead in the opening set.
The 21-year-old Rune could hardly raise his game to compete with the seven-time Wimbledon champion and, like last year, failed to reach the quarter-finals at the All England Club.
After the win, 37-year-old Djokovic said, “I don't think Holger played even close to his best. It was a tough start for him. It disturbed him mentally.”
Djokovic will face Alex de Minaur in the next round. Australian player Minaur defeated Arthur Fils of France 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
In another match, American veteran Taylor Fritz came back from two sets down to beat Alexander Zverev 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3.
In women's singles, last year's semifinalist Elina Svitolina of Ukraine defeated China's Wang Xinyu 6-2, 6-1 in under an hour. 99-year-old Svitolina will face 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals.
