Mumbai: The Government of India has announced that actor Mithun Chakraborty, who introduced disco dance to an entire generation of Indians, will be honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke, the highest award of Indian cinema. Now 74 years old, Mithun attracted everyone's attention by winning the National Award in the first film of his career in 1976, 'Mrigaya'. In the 80s, when the video cassette attack shook the theater industry, Mithun earned the title of Amitabh Bachchan of poor producers by making many low and medium budget films successful with his acting. Expressing his happiness for the honour, Mithun said, “I have grown up sleeping on footpaths, on garden benches. I have not achieved anything without struggle but when such achievements are achieved after hard struggle, then all those pains are forgotten.
Mithun also played action roles in films including 'Gulaami' and romantic roles in films like 'Pyaar Jhukta Nahi'. Mithun's supporting role in Amitabh's highly acclaimed film 'Agneepath' won everyone's appreciation. Mithun had a huge fan base in the action films of the 80s and his films were considered guaranteed hits, especially at smaller centres. His unique way of saying 'Koi Shaka…' was popular among the youth of that time. Young people wanted to copy her hairstyle and dance.
As soon as Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced the Dadasaheb Phalke Award to Mithun this morning, congratulations started pouring in from many dignitaries and fans. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Gemini as a cultural icon loved by many generations.
Mithun has been active in politics for years and is currently in BJP. He has also received the country's third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan. Mithun will be given this award by Dadasaheb Phalke at the 70th National Awards ceremony to be held on October 8.
Mithun said in his response that ever since I got this news, my past life has been wandering in my mind, I remember the kind of struggle I had to face for a living and a roof. In Calcutta I lived on the footpath. After reaching Mumbai from there, I spent the nights near public gardens. After this struggle today when I got this award, I have no words.” Everyone knows that my life has not been easy. I got nothing without struggle, but when you get such respect, you forget the pain of that struggle. Truly God has been very generous towards me.
