Islamabad: The US Embassy here has issued strict instructions to Americans not to stay in some hotels in Peshawar. Among these, the name of Hotel-Marina is prominent. Apart from this, the embassy has also formally ordered its citizens to stay away from the golf club in Peshawar. It has been said in a strict tone that do not go to this hotel or golf club till 16th December.
The main reason for this is security. Shia conflict has been going on in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for the last few weeks. Recently it has taken the form of war.
At least 10 people were killed and more than 21 injured in recent Shia-Sunni fighting in Khurram district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, bordering Afghanistan, Pakistan police said. According to the order issued by the US Embassy to its citizens based on information provided by the police about the fighting that broke out again on Tuesday:
1. Neither stay in Serena Hotel in Peshawar nor in hotels around it.
2. If you have landed in Serena or nearby hotels, evacuate immediately.
3. Stay tuned to local news. Also check personal safety measures.
4. Keep an eye on the surrounding situation and carry the latest ID card with you.
5. Watching the instructions issued by the Government of Pakistan regarding security on TV and continuing to cooperate with local authorities and security forces.
6. Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces and the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) (Frontier Province) are currently in turmoil.
7. Stay away from India-Pakistan border and Line of Actual Control as there is frequent firing (between India and Pakistan).
Khurram Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud said that in the last one week, more than 100 people have lost their lives and more than 180 people have been injured. Even after the meeting of Shia-Sunni elders, peace could not be established in the area. At present, more police and government forces are being sent to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Last Friday, 47 people were killed in an attack on a passenger van between Alizai and Bagat gangs in Pi Chinar. In other areas also, 37 people were killed in Shia-Sunni clashes.
Even though Shia-Sunni have announced a 7-day ceasefire, the firing continues one on one. Both sides blame each other.
