Criticism of India in US Religious Freedom Report- 2023

The US State Department released its 2023 Religious Freedom Report on Wednesday. The report mentions violence against minority communities in India. The US State Department has released a report saying that the use of hate language against minorities is increasing in India.

The process of demolishing the houses and places of worship of minorities is increasing continuously. The US criticized its close ally and said that prejudice against minorities is increasing in India. Many organizations monitoring religious freedom in the United States have been demanding to include India in this list for the last several years. But the US administration has been postponing this demand. Now Washington itself has criticized India in its report. The report also mentions many such incidents where the minority community has been targeted. The report also mentions the incident in which a railway official shot dead three innocent Muslim passengers in a train near Mumbai. The matter is still under investigation. The report also mentions anti-Muslim speeches, abolition of special status of Muslim-dominated Kashmir, new citizenship law, incidents of demolition of Muslim property in the name of removing illegal construction.

What did the US Foreign Minister say?

The US report said that senior US officials have been expressing concern about religious freedom to their Indian counterparts since last year. Releasing the annual report, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, “In India, we have seen a significant increase in incidents of anti-conversion laws, hate speech against minorities, demolition of places of worship and houses of minority religious communities.” Human rights experts say that the number of attacks on minorities in India has increased under the rule of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party BJP.
