Public relations webdesk. The special district court for cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act recently refused to discharge Tangedco commercial inspector C Selvaraj (42) in Puzhuthipatti from a corruption case. The complainant P Karuppaiah dug a borewell in Karumipatti and applied for a free electricity connection under a government scheme. However, Selvaraj demanded a bribe of Rs 2,500 to get the connection approved. Karuppaiah informed DVAC officials about this, who laid a trap and caught Selvaraj red-handed.
In his discharge plea, Selvaraj said that there were lapses in the DVAC’s process of obtaining permission from TANGEDCO to prosecute him and that some details in the arrest report and the remand report card also did not match.
Special judge N Senthil Murali initially refused to accept the claim and asked whether the criminal proceedings could be quashed due to the delay in prosecution sanction. The court said that even a typographical error in an arrest or remand report is not a ground to discharge a suspect and dismissed the discharge petition.
