The virtual meeting comes at a time when India is approaching 250,000 daily infections in the new Covid wave driven by the highly infectious Omicron variant. The rapid rise in COVID-19 cases has prompted authorities to impose new restrictions, including a night curfew and a ban on large gatherings.
Prime Minister Modi chaired a high-level meeting last week to assess the COVID-19 situation in the country, the ongoing health system preparedness, the status of the vaccination campaign and the public health impacts of the Omicron variant. According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), during this meeting, the Union Health Secretary also gave a detailed presentation on the global jump in the cases of Kovid.
PM’s emphasis on creating adequate health infrastructure
During the meeting, PM Modi asked the officials to maintain coordination with the states regarding the need to ensure adequate health infrastructure at the district level. He directed the officers to continue intensive control and active surveillance in high case reporting clusters and provide necessary technical assistance to high case reporting states.
Amidst rising cases of corona, India has expanded the vaccination campaign for adolescents aged 15-18 years and started giving precautionary doses to health care, frontline workers and senior citizens with comorbidities. PM Narendra Modi has directed officials to further intensify the vaccine campaign for adolescents in “mission mode”. He said a meeting should be convened with chief ministers to discuss state-specific scenarios, best efforts and public health response.
Daily case figure is close to 2.5 lakh
The Prime Minister’s Office said in a release, “PM Modi also talked about the importance of continued scientific research in testing, vaccines and pharmacological interventions, including genome sequencing, as the pandemic continues to escalate.”
Meanwhile, the case of corona is increasing in the country. Till Wednesday night, 2.5 lakh new cases had been reported in the country in a day. Compared to a day earlier, more than 50 thousand cases have been reported. For the first time since May 26, more than 2 lakh new cases have been registered in a day. On Wednesday, 246,912 new cases of corona were reported in India.
