Climate change: India lost $120 billion in 23 years

Due to climate change, crores of people in India have been affected since 2000 and the country has suffered a total economic loss of 120 billion dollars. In 2023, the bursting of a glacial lake in Sikkim along with various floods, landslides caused loss of life, with a total of over 1,50,00,000 people affected and over 2,000 killed. This information has been obtained from the data of Climate Disaster Database.

In the year 2000, 10.40 crore people in India were affected by natural disasters. In the year 2015, 34.70 crore people were affected. Which is the highest figure of this century. Whereas in the year 2015, there were ten flood incidents across India. Also this year, 3,000 people lost their lives due to natural disasters. According to National Crime Records Bureau data, the number of deaths due to natural disasters like heat wave, extreme cold, floods, landslides, torrential rains, lightning incidents and other natural causes is increasing. According to Bureau data, two percent of the total deaths in India in the year 2022 were due to natural disasters. In 2018, 6,800 people died due to natural disasters, while in 2022, 8,000 people died due to natural disasters. Nine percent of deaths in Jai were due to heat wave and seven percent were due to various flood incidents.
