WASHINGTON: In the face of China's aggression, the Narendra Modi government is seeking an unprecedented relationship with the US, but it wants to proceed cautiously so as not to get caught and leave it (the US) in the lurch, as US National Security Adviser Lt. Gen (retd) H.R. McMaster wrote in his recent book.
He was the National Security Advisor of America during the time of Donald Trump. In his book At War With Ourselves, he has described India's NSA. He also wrote about Ajit Doval's interview. However, the very next day he was removed from that post, that is a different matter. He wrote that, the day before I was removed from that post, I had hosted a dinner for Ajit Doval. Which was hosted at FT-McNair, a quiet place at the confluence of two rivers. We spoke very slowly and pretended to discuss routine topics. I was surprised when Doval asked me how long our friendship would last? This simply meant that I would be removed from that post.
McMaster further wrote that I also reviewed the ongoing US strategy during the 10-year war in South Asia, prepared by Trump in August.
McMaster visited Afghanistan, Pakistan and the US from April 14 to 17. During that period, he met the then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Foreign Secretary Jaishankar and ASA. He also held discussions with Doval.
General (Mr) Chek Master further wrote in the book that the aggressive policy of Xi Jinping has brought the world's two largest and oldest democracies closer, but India fears that the US may leave it in the middle. On the other hand, India is a little wary of the US in South Asia due to the US policy of keeping hands in both milk and curd (with India) and maintaining relations with both Pakistan. These imaginary concerns inspired India to start the NAM (Non-Aligned Movement) movement during the Cold War. On the other hand, extensive activities were also carried out to buy weapons from Russia. Also, referring to China's aggressive policy, he said that it wants to establish its influence in the Eastern Hemisphere at the expense of India. Therefore, it is maintaining more and more military presence in the Indo-Pacific region. Therefore, it is important that India, America, Japan and like-minded countries stand together. So that the Indo-Pacific region can remain free and open. Which will be an ideal model for China's One Belt One Road initiative.
