Paris, August 3 (HS). Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei, a three-time world 10,000m champion, became the Olympic 10,000m champion in the first track and field final of the Paris 2024 Games, getting underway at the Stade de France.
Joshua Cheptegei set an Olympic record of 26:43.14. The fastest finisher was Ethiopia's Berihu Aregawi who won silver in 26:43.44, while USA's Grant Fisher continued his form to win bronze in 26:43.46.
In the mixed 4x400m heats, the American quartet of Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Bryce Dedmon and Kellyn Brown won gold. The American quartet clocked 3:07.41 to break the previous record – set when the US won the world title in Budapest last year – by more than a second.
Norwood gave the US team an early lead by running 44.47 seconds, then Little extended the lead by running the second leg in 49.32 seconds, the fastest lap of any woman in the preliminary round. Dedmon took 44.17 seconds on the third leg, and then Brown took 49.45 seconds to give the US team the win.
Brown crossed the line more than three seconds ahead of France, who set a national record of 3:10.60. Belgium finished third in 3:10.74, also a national record.
