Celta Vigo sacks Rafael Benitez, Giraldez becomes the new coach

Madrid, March 13 (HS). La Liga's struggling club Celta Vigo sacked Rafael Benitez as coach on Tuesday after a 4-0 defeat to Real Madrid and replaced him with B-team boss Claudio Giraldez.

Sunday's defeat leaves Celta 17th in the league with 24 points, just two more than Cadiz and currently in the last relegation spot.

“Rafa Benitez and his coaching staff have left RC Celta after eight months of full commitment and complete dedication, but the team has not achieved the results expected by the club,” Celta's official website confirmed.

“The Club would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to Rafa Benitez and his assistants for the involvement, honesty and professionalism they have shown since his arrival and for the tireless work they have done,” the club said. “RC Celta also wishes him all the best for the future and wishes him every success.”

Shortly after announcing Benítez's dismissal, Celta appointed Giraldez as the new head coach. However, the club did not provide any details regarding the length of his contract.

Despite some good performances, Benítez was never able to produce consistent performances for his side, and he further angered the fans when he was left out of the starting 11 for the Copa del Rey quarter-final game at home to Real Sociedad in January. Substitute players were fielded.
