Bridge collapse in Papua New Guinea blocks aid to landslide victims

GENEVA: Heavy machinery heading to try and rescue nearly 2,000 people buried under mud and rocks in a deadly landslide in Papua New Guinea had to take another long route after a bridge on the route collapsed. As rain continues, the ground is becoming more slippery. Ditto other long routes where heavy machinery has to move very carefully. Also, support workers accompanying those machines have to maintain and move very slowly.

This information was given by the regional spokesperson of the International Organization for Migration through video conference in the meeting going on from Bangkok to Geneva.

He said, because of what happened (the pool collapsed), the main highway leading to Itai Viriri Enga (province) has been closed. So heavy machinery has to be taken through another long route to remove that soil, stones etc. So rescue and relief work has been delayed. The situation has become even more difficult due to the continuing rain. The rescue workers going with the machines also have to be rescued slowly because the ground has become slippery. Along with this, he said that the situation has become even more difficult due to the rain. Some parts (of the mountains) are still unstable. The situation is becoming difficult, very difficult and serious.

It is noteworthy that this country located in the equatorial region receives less rainfall for almost twelve months. Therefore the forests are also dense. The President of Papua New Guinea is of Indian origin. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also visited Papua New Guinea. After receiving the news of this tragedy, India has immediately started giving them aid of 1 million dollars. More aid is yet to be sent.
