Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee has praised Scott Boland and described him as similar to former leg spinner Stuart McGrail. According to Lee, just like McGrail got a chance to play in the absence of Shane Warne, similarly Boland also gets a chance only when the regular members of the team are not playing for some reason.
Stuart McGrail took 208 wickets in 44 Test matches in his career, even though he did not always get the opportunity to play as a permanent member of the team. Similarly, Scott Boland performed brilliantly in the recently concluded five-match Test series against India. He gets a place in the playing eleven of the Australian team when any of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins or Josh Hazlewood is out. This time, Boland, who joined the team in place of Josh Hazlewood, won the title of third highest wicket taker by taking 21 wickets.
Brett Lee told Business News, “This situation is a bit like McGrill and Warne. Perhaps I can’t give a better example than this. Stuart McGrail took 200 Test wickets as a backup bowler to Shane Warne, but he was not the only backup bowler. He could have been the number one spinner anywhere in the world.”
Lee also said, “I think Boland has the same misfortune in that he was born at the wrong time, when Australian fast bowling was so strong and talented.” Boland received the Player of the Match award in the recent Test match played in Sydney, where he took four wickets in the first innings and six wickets in the second innings.
