Odisha:Odisha’s ruling BJD on Tuesday said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s efforts were successful after the Narendra Modi government introduced the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha. BJD vice-president Debi Prasad Mishra said her party nominated 33 per cent women candidates from the state in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Of the seven women candidates fielded by the party, five won the election.
He said the BJD government has also reserved 50 percent seats for women in local bodies in the state.
Speaking to reporters, senior state minister Pramila Malik said the credit for introducing the bill in the Lok Sabha should go to Patnaik and his efforts. She said he has always worked to uplift the status of women in the society and His dream has now been fulfilled. He said that veteran Biju Patnaik, when he was the CM, gave women a chance in politics and his son Naveen has accelerated this process. Mallick said, the Odisha Assembly had adopted a resolution two years ago, demanding reservation of 33 per cent seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women.
The Center introduced a constitutional amendment bill to reserve one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women. The government said this will enable greater participation of women in policy-making at the state and national levels and will help in achieving the goal of making India a developed country by 2047.
Women’s reservation will come into effect after the delimitation process begins and will continue for 15 years. The bill states that the seats reserved for women will be rotated after each delimitation process.
