News India Live, Digital Desk: Tamil Nadu Stampede : You might remember that on April 27, there was a stampede in the Thogamalai area of Karur during a program to distribute free gifts to the poor. In this heart-wrenching incident, four women lost their lives and many others were seriously injured. Actually, this program was organized by former minister M.R. It was organized at Vijayabhaskar’s house by an NGO named ‘Manushyanaye Thara Vaaju’ (Humanity will survive). TVK chief Vijay had claimed in his appeal that at the time of the incident there were neither adequate security arrangements nor were policemen present to control the crowd. He said that since some political and influential people are involved in this, an impartial investigation cannot be expected from the local police.
Earlier, Madurai Bench of Madras High Court had sought investigation report of the incident from the police. But the High Court had refused to hand over the investigation of this case to CBI. Challenging this decision of the High Court, Vijay had approached the Supreme Court.
Now the Supreme Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to provide all kinds of cooperation to the CBI for investigation and provide all the documents. It remains to be seen what new facts emerge in this case from the CBI investigation and whether the victims get justice. With this decision, it is hoped that those responsible for the incident will be punished and concrete steps will be taken to prevent such incidents in future.
