UK MP Shivani Raja takes oath on Bhagavad Gita: 29-year-old Shivani Raja, originally from Gujarat, took oath in the UK Parliament with the Bhagavad Gita. Shivani won a historic victory for the Conservative Party on the Leicester East seat. She ended the 37-year dominance of the Labour Party on this seat. She contested the election against Indian-origin Labour Party candidate Rajesh Agarwal.
Proud oath of Gujarat origin MP
After taking oath as a British MP, Shivani wrote on social media, 'It is an honor to take oath in Parliament today to represent Leicester East. I am proud to swear my allegiance to King Charles on the Gita.' It is worth noting that in the year 2022, after the T20 Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan, there was a clash between the Hindu community of Indian origin and Muslims in the city of Leicester. Shivani won from this incident.
This victory is also important because Leicester East has been a stronghold of the Labour Party since 1987. Shivani's victory is the first time in 37 years that she has been elected from this constituency. Apart from Shivani, 27 other MPs of Indian origin have been elected to the House of Commons in the elections held on 4 July in the United Kingdom. The number of women in the new House of Commons is the highest ever. There are about 263 women MPs.
The Labour Party won 412 seats in the 650-member House of Commons, an increase of 211 from the last election in 2019. Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party got only 121 seats, 250 seats less than the last election. The Labour Party's vote share was 33.7 per cent, while the Conservative Party's vote share was 23.7 per cent.
