BCCI: In India, advertisements for tobacco products are often displayed in stadiums during cricket tournaments. These advertisements are not directly related to tobacco products, but are promoted by other products related to tobacco products.

The Union Health Ministry has requested the BCCI to stop covert advertisements promoting tobacco and alcohol in cricket stadiums in India.

The ministry further said that cricketers are role models for millions of youth not only in the country but across the world. In a letter to BCCI President Roger Binny and SAI Director General Sandip Pradhan, Director General of Health Services Dr Atul Goyal on Thursday said that sportspersons, especially cricketers, are role models for the youth to promote a healthy, active and productive lifestyle.

Dr. urged BCCI to ban tobacco-alcohol advertising . Atul Goel said, BCCI is entrusted with the task of making policies, guidelines, guidelines to promote the game of cricket keeping in mind the Indian players and cricket fans and during cricket events like IPL, some of them – famous cricketers and famous actors – advertise tobacco or alcohol. It is disappointing to see this.

It further said, “BCCI may take this issue seriously and take a positive step to ban players from doing tobacco or alcohol related advertisements. They are requested not to allow such hidden advertisements by other celebrities in BCCI sporting events like IPL.”
