Dhaka, 10 November (HS). Nearly three months after former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country, the student wing of the Awami League has announced a protest in the capital Dhaka on Sunday. However, the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government has issued a stern warning to the Awami League against holding protests.

On Saturday, Yunus' press secretary Shafiqul Alam described Awami League as a fascist party and said that it will not be allowed to protest in Bangladesh. He says that legal agencies will take strict action against those taking out rallies on the orders of Sheikh Hasina. The interim government will not tolerate any violence or attempts to disturb the law and order situation in the country.

It is noteworthy that last month, the interim government of Mohammad Yunus had banned the Student League, the student wing of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's party Awami League, under the anti-terrorism law. It was claimed that the organization's activities were a threat to public safety. The interim government also advocated banning the Awami League, calling it fascist. The student wing of Awami League has announced a protest in Dhaka today against this decision of the government.

It is noteworthy that in June this year, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh reversed the government decision made after the quota reform movement in 2018 and reinstated the 30 percent quota for the descendants of freedom fighters. This spread so much resentment among the common students that it took a violent form. The situation worsened so much that on August 5, the then Prime Minister of the country Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country. Since then, Awami League leaders and workers are being continuously targeted. Most of the party leaders are either in jail or in exile. During this period, violent incidents took place on a large scale against other minority populations including Hindus. Which was strongly condemned by the whole world.
