New Delhi, June 27 (HS). Army Chief General Manoj Pandey on Thursday flagged off the D5 Motorcycle Expedition Team of the Indian Army from the National War Memorial in New Delhi. He interacted with the members of the expedition team and handed over the motorcycle expedition flag to the team leader. Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) President Archana Pandey honored Veer Naris during the program.
The expedition is being organised to commemorate the 25th anniversary of India's victory in the 1999 Kargil war. The flag-off ceremony was attended by Army Vice Chief Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, senior serving officers, Kargil war veterans, Veer Naris and ex-servicemen. The all-India expedition was launched on June 12 from Dinjan in the east of the country, Dwarka in the west and Dhanushkodi in the south. Three teams of eight motorcyclists travelled through diverse terrains and challenging routes before reaching Delhi.
Former Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor met the teams at Delhi Cantt on June 26 and lauded the Kargil War veterans for their bravery and expressed gratitude to the sponsors for their support. The event was enthusiastically attended by around 500 persons including serving officers, Kargil War veterans, Veer Naris and families. After Delhi, the three teams are now proceeding towards Drass via two different routes. One team will cover a distance of 1,085 km via Ambala, Amritsar, Jammu, Udhampur and Srinagar, while the other team will cover a distance of 1,509 km via Chandimandir, Manali, Sarchu, Nyoma, Tangtse and Leh.
The expedition will culminate at Gun Hill in Drass, which is recorded in history for its strategic importance during the Kargil war. The expedition team members will interact with Kargil War heroes, veterans and Veer Naris en route and pay homage at war memorials. The expedition is led by the Artillery Regiment, which played a vital role in ensuring the success of Operation Vijay. The expedition is a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the Kargil War Heroes. The event is sponsored by Hero MotoCorp, HPCL, Apollo Hospitals, IFFCO and Bank of Baroda as a tribute to the heroes.
