How much has the number of deaths due to ampox increased?
Monkeypox cases have been reported in 12 of Africa's 54 countries, with Congo reporting the highest number of cases so far this year. According to the Africa Centre for Disease Control, 94 percent or 17,794 of the total 18,910 cases in 2024 occurred in Congo alone. This year, 541 people have died from the disease, with 535 deaths in Congo alone.
30 lakh vaccines needed
An official in the African country said the European Union and the vaccine manufacturer have promised to supply more than two million vaccines. The US agency said it has donated 50,000 doses of the vaccine to Congo. Japan has also donated some vaccine doses to Congo, but Africa may need far more. Congo's health minister said his country alone needs three million vaccine doses to stop the outbreak of ampox that has spread to at least four African countries.
African countries have limited capacity to contain the disease
Testing and surveillance capabilities are limited in many affected African countries, according to an African government official. According to data received on Wednesday, 1,030 of the 1,405 new cases in Africa in the last seven days were reported in Congo. At the same time, after increasing cases of monkeypox in Africa and the identification of a new type of virus capable of spreading more easily in Congo, the World Health Organization declared it a global emergency last week.
