The story behind the closure of X in Brazil | News India

The blocking of social media platform X in Brazil has caused many difficulties for users. Brazilians say, it is as if we do not know what is going on in the world. In fact, this is the latest chapter in the dispute between Elon Musk and a judge of the Brazilian Supreme Court.

The judge said that X must appoint a legal representative in Brazil. But X's owner Elon Musk refused to do so. Brazilians found it difficult to navigate X's AVG on other social media platforms. Brazil has been one of the biggest markets for X. X's users here number in the crores. Many Brazilians say that on the first day without X they felt cut off from the world. Chico Brarny, a well-known Brazilian entertainment writer, wrote in Threads, a text-based app developed by Instagram, “I feel like I don't know what's going on in the world right now. Strange. The Threads algorithm is like a restaurant in which you can eat everything. Here the waiter keeps serving things that I would never order.” Another such platform is BlueSky, which is used by a large number of Brazilians after the suspension of X. About two lakh new users have joined BlueSky in the last three days.

Ruling of the Supreme Court of Brazil

X's case was heard in the Supreme Court of Brazil on August 30. Justice Moraes ordered Elon Musk to appoint a legal representative for X in Brazil within 24 hours. Otherwise, the social media site would be suspended in the country. But Elon Musk did not agree. In the hearing on this case on August 31, the Supreme Court ordered a complete ban on X with immediate effect. Morris directed Apple and Google to remove X from their app stores within five days.

If a user tries to use X he will be penalized

Moraes said that any user who tries to use X through VPN will have to pay a fine of up to 50 thousand reais (about Rs 7.47 lakh). The court also said that the suspension will continue until the rule comes into force. The agreement includes paying a fine of 18.5 million reais (about Rs 27.66 crore) and appointing a legal representative in Brazil. Also, the bank accounts of satellite internet provider Starlink have also been frozen in Brazil.

The incident behind the ban

Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexander de Moraes and Musk have been at loggerheads for months. In early 2024, Morrison ordered some of X's accounts to be blocked. These accounts were accused of spreading fake news and hate, but X did not comply with the judge's order. Elon Musk's platform said the judge was trying to impose censorship on their app. X also closed all of its offices in Brazil. However, the platform continued to serve users in the country. X then claimed that Justice Moraes had threatened to arrest one of the representatives of the law in Brazil if the company did not comply. Musk then protested the judge's decision and called it tyrannical and arbitrary and threatened to reactivate some of the suspended accounts. Musk also called Morrison a fake judge.

Brazilian rule

In fact, Brazilian law requires all internet companies to have a legal representative in the country. This ensures that there is someone to communicate to the law about decisions related to the company. He is a person who is fit to perform any required tasks.
