World number one Yannick Sinner has reached the fourth round of the US Open with an easy win over Chris O'Connell. Sinner is now considered a strong contender to win the title after Djokovic and Alcarez were eliminated from the competition.
Sinner lived up to his reputation, beating O'Connell 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in less than two hours. 2012 champion Daniil Medvedev has also reached the next round. The Russian player defeated Flavio Cobolli in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. He will next face Nuno Borges, who defeated Jacob Mencic in a tough match 6-7 (5), 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-0. In the women's category, world number one and 2022 champion Iga Swiatek defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-2. Fifth seed Jasmine Paolini also defeated Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-4. She will next face 2023 French Open finalist Carolina Muchova. In the women's category, Jessica Pegula, Ludmila Samsonova and Diana Schneider have also managed to advance.
Sinner, who won the Australian Open in January, will play American Tommy Paul in the next round on Monday. Paul defeated Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo. Van de Denschulp, who defeated Alcaraz, could not maintain his winning streak and lost to Jack Draper in straight sets.
