Indian shooter Avani Lekhara has performed brilliantly at the Paris Paralympics 2024. Avani won the gold medal in the women's 10m air rifle (SH1) event on Friday (August 30). Avani won the gold medal with a Paralympic record. Mona Agarwal of India won the bronze medal in the same event. With these two medals, India's account has been opened in the current Paralympic Games. India has one gold and one bronze medal.
Avni won gold
Avni scored 249.7 points in the final, which is a Paralympic record. Bronze medalist Mona scored 228.7 points. Avni had also won the gold medal in the same event at the Tokyo Paralympics (2020). That means she has defended her title. South Korea's Lee Unri won the silver medal in this event. Avni won the bronze medal in the 50m rifle 3 position at the Tokyo Paralympics.
Avani Lekhara finished second in the qualification and managed to make it to the finals. Compatriot Mona Agarwal, who has been in great form for the last one year, also qualified for the eight-shooter final by finishing fifth. Defending champion Avani scored 625.8 and finished behind Irina Shatnik. Irina set a new record with a score of 627.5 in the Paralympic qualification round.
What is SH1 series?
Mona, a two-time World Cup gold medallist, scored 623.1 in her first Paralympics. Avni became the country's most high-profile para-athlete by winning a gold medal in the SH1 category at the Tokyo Paralympics three years ago. Avni uses a wheelchair after suffering a serious lower body injury in a car accident. In shooting, the SH1 category comprises shooters who have impaired movement of their arms, lower torso, legs, or have deformities in their arms or legs.
