Dhaka: Former ambassadors, government officials, politicians and think-tanks are trying to spoil India-Bangladesh relations. A senior leader of the Bangladesh National Party warned on Thursday that India should forget the past and build new relations with Bangladesh and break ties with Sheikh Hasina. Meanwhile, the chief advisor of the interim government, Noor Jahan Begum, said that more than 1,000 people have died in protests against Sheikh Hasina's government.

Days after India raised the issue of targeting of Hindus in Sheikh Hasina's anti-government protests, senior leader of Khaleda Zia-led Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said the issue of safety of minorities in the country is an internal matter and recommended stronger ties with the neighbouring country.

He said an ecosystem of former diplomats, government officials, politicians and think-tanks in the Indian government created the impression that without the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina, relations between the two countries would deteriorate. Chowdhury said Bangladesh wants strong ties with its neighbour India but India has failed to recognise the sentiments of the people of Bangladesh. That is why they continued to support the country's only party, the Awami League, and its leader Sheikh Hasina.

He said that this ecosystem has created an illusion in the Indian government that if the Awami League is not in power, there will be a security issue for India, power will go into the hands of fundamentalists, Hindus will be in danger. All these things have misled India. However, now India should break ties with Sheikh Hasina. India should recognize the people of Bangladesh leaving behind the old people and build relations with the people. Bangladesh also wants good relations with India.

Meanwhile, Noor Jahan Begum, health adviser to the interim government, said more than 1,000 people were killed across the country during protests against Sheikh Hassi's government, while more than 400 people were blinded in police firing. Noor Jahan Begum said several policemen were also injured during the protests and were treated.
