India's Under-17 women's wrestling team was stranded at Amman airport in Jordan on Saturday after missing their return flight after a stellar performance at the World Championship. Nine women players and three coaches were scheduled to return to India on Saturday but were booked on different flights. Coach Jai Bhagwan,
Shilpi Sheorana and Rekha Rani were to board an Emirates flight to Dubai, while the young contestants were booked on Qatar Airways. The flight from Cochin, India was scheduled to depart at 6.10 pm and reach Dubai at 10.10 pm. From there, they were to catch another flight at 3.55 am and reach Delhi in the morning. The first flight was scheduled to depart at 8.30 pm and reach Doha at 11.10 pm, but according to the flight status, it departed at 6.18 pm, however, it was not clear if the flight timings were changed.
A source in the Indian team said that the young female pioneers missed the flight. It is a disappointing situation what happened. There should not be a separate booking for the young initiates. The Sports Authority of India should have booked them all together. The young pioneers are all young. A source said that as far as the ideal situation is concerned, at least one coach should have accompanied them.
