The second largest diamond in the world: The world's third largest diamond has been found in the African country Botswana. The diamond is a rough stone of 2,492 carats. This diamond was found in Botswana by the Canadian company Lucara Diamonds.
It is the largest discovery since the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond, which was discovered in South Africa in 1905. The diamond was cut into nine separate stones, several of which are set in the British Crown Jewels.
This diamond was found in the Karowe mine, about 500 km north of Botswana's capital Gaborone. The estimated price of this diamond could be more than $40 million i.e. Rs 3.35 billion. The Botswana government said that this is the largest diamond discovered in the southern African state. As soon as the diamond was found, the shares of Lucara, the company that discovered it, jumped by 40%.
Lucara said in a statement that the stone is one of the largest rough diamonds ever found. Lucara chief William Lamb said: “We are delighted with the discovery of this extraordinary 2,492 carat diamond.
