Ukraine said on Sunday it had attacked another key bridge in the Kursk region with the aim of disrupting supply routes to Moscow. Kiev's unprecedented offensive on Russian soil continued for a second week. Meanwhile, Russia has increased pressure in eastern Ukraine. It claims to have captured another village a few kilometers from the logistics center of the Ukrainian-occupied Pokrovsk.
Russian military bloggers shared photos of the destruction of the bridge
Ukrainian air force commander Mykola Oleschuk published an aerial video on Telegram of an explosion that destroyed a bridge near the Russian town of Zvyanoye. “Another bridge has been destroyed,” he wrote. Oleschuk said the air force is “depriving the enemy of its military capabilities with precision air strikes,” however, it is unclear when Ukraine launched the attack. Oleschuk did not give a date. Russian military bloggers shared photos of the destruction of the same bridge on Saturday.
another bridge destroyed
Kiev sent troops and armoured vehicles across the border on August 6. It was their biggest attack on Russian territory since the Kremlin launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. On Friday, Ukraine claimed it had destroyed another bridge in Glushkovo.
The purpose of creating a buffer zone
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his address on Sunday evening about the operations in the Kursk region said that our people are doing a great job in all areas. He said that the aim of the Kursk offensive was to create a buffer zone in the territory of the attackers. The Ukrainian President, addressing in particular Britain, France and the US, again appealed for the prompt delivery of key equipment.
Big problem for Russia
According to Russian military bloggers, attacks on both bridges over the Seym River that flows through Kursk have limited Russia's options for crossing the river. Moscow said the destruction of the bridges has hampered evacuation efforts. Russian officials say more than 120,000 people have fled the region since the fighting began.
Russia is moving towards Pokrovsk
Russia's Defence Ministry said on Sunday that its troops had captured another border township, Sviridonivka, about 15 kilometres from Pokrovsk. Pokrovsk is important for the supply of Ukrainian troops and towns on the eastern front, located at the intersection of a major road. It has long been a target of the Russian military.
Russian troops advance towards Pokrovsk
Russia's forces have been advancing on Pokrovsk for months, capturing small villages to reach the outskirts of the city. “There have been dozens of attacks in just one day, but our soldiers, our brigades are doing everything possible to hold their positions,” Zelensky said in his evening address. Sergei Dobrick, the head of Pokrovsk's military administration, warned earlier this week that Russia was a little more than 10 kilometers from the outskirts of the city. He urged the rest to evacuate.
