Dhaka, August 17 (HS). Students of Dhaka University in Bangladesh on Saturday protested in support of the ongoing demonstrations against the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The protest was organized under the banner of “Awaaz Tolo Nari” (women, raise your voice). The protest was held near the Raju statue of Dhaka University.

During the protest, Rahnuma Ahmed Nirat, a student of the Physics Department of Dhaka University, said, “We are aware of the uncooperative attitude of the RG Kar Medical College administration. Being a woman, we demand that the administration provide maximum legal aid, strictly implement the law and ensure justice as soon as possible.”

Anya Fahmin, a student of the Department of Anthropology, said, “Women are facing rape all over the world and we fully support the movement for fair accountability in the RG Kar Hospital case in Kolkata. We also demand a public trial in the case of Sohgi Jahan Tonu’s rape and murder in Comilla, especially when the army is involved. The government should ensure a safe country for women through this mass movement of students.”

Lamisha Jahan, a student of Jahangirnagar University, said, “In past rape cases, the names of the victims have often been made public, while the names of the culprits are often kept hidden. Sometimes these cases are suppressed by the government or the ruling party. The days of silence are over now. We have to raise our voice against all kinds of abusive incidents against women.”

Anika Arefin Anu, a student of the finance department, said that we have to make a safe country for women. Students have played an important role in the mass movement, and we have to force our government to take action in all rape cases and ensure the safety of women.
