The petition of India's star female wrestler Vinesh Phogat in Paris Olympics will now be heard on Friday i.e. today. She filed an appeal in CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sports) against her disqualification, which was accepted for hearing. In this, she has demanded to be given a common silver medal. The sports court has given Vinesh the opportunity to appoint her lawyer for the hearing. The hearing will be held at 1:30 pm Indian time.
Actually, the hearing was to be held in CAS on Thursday itself. The Court of Arbitration for Sports offered 4 lawyers to represent Vinesh. Their names are Joel Monluis, Estelle Ivanova, Habin Estelle Kim and Charles Amson. All are supporters of CAS for the Paris 2024 Olympics. But the Indian team also sought time to appoint an Indian lawyer for the hearing. On this, the court gave them time and adjourned the hearing till the next day i.e. Friday.
According to the information received, former Solicitor General of India and King's Counsel Harish Salve will appear before CAS on behalf of the Indian Olympic Association in the Vinesh Phogat disqualification case. Salve is scheduled to appear in the hearing today at 10 am Paris time. Salve has been informed about the case and his name has been presented before CAS as the IOA's lawyer. Apart from this, the decision can also come on Friday itself. But if the judge feels that he needs more hearing, then another date can be given. However, in most CAS cases, the decision comes on the day of the hearing itself.
Let us tell you that India's hopes in the Olympics were dashed when Vinesh Phogat was disqualified. A few hours before the final match of the 50 kg freestyle wrestling category, Vinesh's weight was found to be 100 grams more. Vinesh had a chance to win the gold medal but she was disqualified a few hours before the final due to overweight. In such a situation, due to the rules, she missed the medal even after winning the semi-finals. But now after the matter went to CAS, Vinesh's hopes of getting a medal have been revived.
