The central government has closed all Indian visa centers in neighboring Bangladesh till further notice. Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and took refuge in India after massive protests and violence earlier this week. This decision has been taken in view of the entire situation.
Indian Visa Centers have informed the applicants on their website that the next date will be informed via SMS and the passport will be picked up the next day. The notice states that due to the unstable situation, all Indian Visa Application Centers will remain closed until further notice. You will be informed of the next application date by SMS on the phone. The appeal also states that the passport will be available on the next working day.
Bangladesh shuts down visa centres
The announcement comes after India evacuated 190 non-essential staff and their family members from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on Monday. All diplomats are in Bangladesh and working in missions. Apart from the High Commission in Dhaka, India has assistant high commissions or consulates in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet.
Reason for the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government
In June 2024, anti-reservation student protests broke out in Bangladesh over the controversial job quota system that provided 30 percent reservation for the families of veterans who fought in the 1971 Liberation War. The protests, which were initially peaceful, turned violent after police action. The demonstrations then led to a mass movement against Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule, forcing the 76-year-old leader to resign and seek refuge in India.
The unrest in Bangladesh continues even after Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh on Monday after her resignation and came to India with her sister. To make matters worse, hundreds of Hindu homes and shops-commercial centres are being vandalised, looted and set on fire. Amid the violent protests, an interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus will be sworn in on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Indian government is working on securing asylum for Sheikh Hasina in a European country.
