Paris Olympics 2024: Vinesh Phogat has created history. She became the first female wrestler to reach the final of the Olympics. Vinesh defeated Cuba's Lopez Guzman 5-0 in the semi-finals of the women's 50 kg weight category. Vinesh was ahead 1-0 till the first round. Then in the last three minutes, she made a double leg attack on the Cuban wrestler and scored four points. She maintained this lead till the end and made it to the final.
Vinesh's journey in these Olympics has been fantastic. After withdrawing from the Rio Olympics due to injury and then getting eliminated in the Round of 16 at the Tokyo Olympics, Vinesh has shown her talent to the world this year. Vinesh defeated four-time world champion and Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Susaki 3-2 in her first match, the pre-quarterfinals. Then she defeated Oxana 7-5 in the quarterfinals. Now she has made it to the finals by winning 5-0 in the semi-finals.
Vinesh is assured of at least a silver medal and will compete for the gold medal on Wednesday, August 7. Before Vinesh, only two male wrestlers have reached the Olympic finals. Sushil Kumar at the 2012 London Olympics and Ravi Dahiya at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics reached the finals, but both lost the last match.
