If Chopra wins gold, she will become the fifth player in Olympic history to retain the title. With this, he will also become the first Indian to win two gold medals in the Olympic individual category. Neeraj Chopra was born on 24 December 1997 in Khandara village of Panipat district of Haryana. His father Satish Kumar is a common farmer while his mother Saroj Devi is a housewife.

Being overweight changed his life

Neeraj Chopra was overweight as a child. At the age of 11, he weighed around 90 kg. To lose weight and keep him active, his father Satish Kumar enrolled him in a gym in the nearby town of Madlauda. But being the youngest in the gym, Neeraj Chopra often had to work out with equipment that was not used by others in the gym. Because of this, he was not happy with the regular schedule of the gym.

When he told about this at home, his parents supported him and the search for alternative physical activity began. It was at this time that Neeraj went with his father to see the Shivaji Stadium in Panipat which changed his life.

Neeraj was not very fond of running due to his heavy weight. But, there he saw some heavy people practicing javelin throwing and preparing to participate in that sport. This is where Neeraj Chopra got inspired and thus began the journey of an Olympic champion javelin thrower.

Neeraj Chopra is a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army

The Chopra family got a big relief after Neeraj got a job in the Indian Army in the year 2017 as regular and stable income was very important for his family. After becoming a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army, Neeraj Chopra said, “We are farmers. No one in the family has a government job and my family has been supporting me in many difficulties. But now it is a big relief.” “I will be able to help my family financially by continuing my training.”
