Hamas chief Haniyeh and his bodyguard killed in Iran

Tehran: Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Hamas-held Palestinian territory in Gaza, and his bodyguards were killed in a missile attack on their landing site in Tehran, a Hamas statement said on Wednesday. Naturally, Iran also declared a day of mourning after the assassination and Iran's national flag was flown at half-mast.

A statement by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) on the killing said, “We express our condolences to the brave Palestinian nation and the Islamic nation. Also, we express our sorrow and condolences over the martyrdom of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political office of the Islamic country Hamas, and his bodyguard to the great Islamic country of Iran and its resistance forces.”

Haniyeh traveled to Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian. No one has claimed responsibility for the killing, but suspicion naturally turns to Israel. Soon after the killing, Iran's state television announced that there was a strong possibility that Israel was behind the assassination.
