-After hitting the ghats of the temple, Ganga enters Kashi in the north flowing direction. The sages named the Shivalinga as Shultankeshwar.
Varanasi, 29 July (HS). Shiva resides in every particle of Kashi. One of the 12 Jyotirlingas, Shri Kashi Vishwanath (Baba Vishwaeshwar) is situated in this city. The Shivlingas and temples established here from the Ganga Ghats and narrow streets to the rural areas have their own specialty and glory. One such temple, Shultankeshwar, is situated in Madhavpur Rohania on the banks of Ganga.
The waves of Ganga enter Kashi flowing northwards after hitting the ghats of the Shooltankeshwar Mahadev temple situated in the southern corner of Kashi. There is a mythological belief that at the time of Ganga's descent, Mahadev had stopped Ganga with his trident at this very place and took a vow that Ganga would flow touching the city of Kashi. At that time, the speed of Ganga's waves was so high that entire Kashi would have submerged in the vast ocean of water. Then Ganga promised Mahadev that Kashi and its residents will not be harmed. Also, any devotee taking bath in Ganga in Kashi will not be harmed by any aquatic creature. Ganga accepted this promise and then Mahadev withdrew his trident.
Due to this belief, the sages named this Shivaling as Shooltankeshwar. People believe that after worshipping in this temple, Mahadev removes all the troubles of his devotees. Their sorrows are removed. In this temple, the idols of Hanuman ji, Maa Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Kartikeya along with Nandi are present.
Dr Mridul Mishra, the founder president of Shiv Aradhana Samiti, says that Madhav Rishi had established a Shivling here for the continuous worship of Lord Shiva before the descent of Ganga. This temple is also called the southern gate of Kashi. Ganga enters Kashi from here in the northern direction. This Shiv temple of mythological importance is also mentioned in the Shiv Purana. Former BJP MLA of Rohania Surendra Narayan Singh 'Aude' has also contributed to the development of the temple. The lion gate of the temple, the tin shed for visitors, the beautification of the ghat are liked by the devotees of Shiva. In the month of Sawan, a crowd of devotees of Shiva throngs here.
