Dhaka, July 29 (HS). Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan said on Sunday that Bangladesh is fully prepared to host the next ICC Board Meeting and elections of the sport's governing body are also likely to be held there.
Greg Barclay is the current chairman of the ICC. In November 2022, Barclay was unanimously elected as ICC chairman for a second two-year term, which expires later this year.
“It has been confirmed that the next ICC Board meeting will be held in Dhaka. The ICC elections will also likely be held here,” Nazmul told reporters during an impromptu press conference at the secretariat on Sunday.
He said, “I think the ICC elections will be held here as this will be the last board meeting of the current chairman. We hope to give our election mandate by then.”
Nazmul further explained that the ICC is concerned about the unrest in the country, but his presence at the recent ICC Board meeting has reassured the governing body that Bangladesh is on track to host the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup.
Earlier, BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury and BCB women's wing president Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel had also expressed similar sentiments.
There were reports that International Cricket Council members are monitoring the situation in Bangladesh, where the government had to impose a state of emergency last week to control state affairs after people protested on the streets, which has not been lifted yet.
Nazmul did not rule it out completely but insisted that representatives from various countries were confident that the tournament could be held as per schedule after reaching the ICC meeting in Sri Lanka.
Nazmul said, “When I went there, the situation in the country was very bad and there was no communication with Bangladesh from outside and they were very scared with the news they were getting. But after seeing me they said that at least they are sure that everything is fine in the country. After this there was no discussion about it and they just wanted to know what had happened. The most important thing for us is the Women's World Cup which we will host here.”
