Mumbai Champions defeated VVIP Uttar Pradesh by 8 wickets on Wednesday night in the 11th match of the first season of the Indian Premier League (IVPL), thanks to the brilliant all-round performance of former England player Peter Trego. At the same time, the power of former Indian explosive batsman Virender Sehwag, who was playing his first match in this match, was also seen.
VVIP Uttar Pradesh, playing first in this match, scored 176 runs losing 6 wickets in 20 overs. Anshul Kapoor batted brilliantly and scored an unbeaten 87 runs in 59 balls. In this innings he hit 7 fours and 4 sixes.
Apart from Anshul, Rohit Srivastava contributed 30 runs on 22 balls and Puneet Bisht contributed 26 runs on 12 balls. Due to this, Uttar Pradesh's score reached 170. Peter Trego and Afroz Khan took 2-2 wickets for Mumbai. Apart from these two, Amit Sanan and Vinay Yadav got 1-1 success.
Mumbai Champions, who set out to chase the target of 177 runs, did not face much problem and achieved the target in 19 overs by losing 2 wickets. Abhishek Jhunjhunwala scored unbeaten 69 runs on 38 balls, apart from this Peter Trego scored unbeaten 41 runs on 29 balls. Whereas Virender Sehwag, who reached Greater Noida to play in the first match of IVPL, scored 35 runs on 23 balls.
VVIP Uttar Pradesh won the toss and decided to bat first. The team did not get a good start. Bhanu Seth was out on the third ball of the match itself. After this, UP lost 3 more wickets in the powerplay in the form of Pawan Negi, Suresh Raina and Parvinder Singh. In the first 6 overs the team scored 31 runs at the loss of 4 wickets. Peter Trego and Afroz Khan broke the back of Uttar Pradesh by taking 2 wickets each.
From here, Rohit Srivastava and second opener Anshul Kapoor took charge for 15 overs. Both took the score forward till the 15th over. Rohit and Anshul made a partnership of 77 runs for the 5th wicket. Vinay Yadav broke this partnership in the 15th over.
In the death overs, Puneet Bisht scored 26 runs and added 48 runs with Anshul Kapoor for the sixth wicket. In the 18th over, Amit Sanan broke this partnership by taking the wicket of Puneet Bisht. Anshul and Vinod Wilson scored 20 runs each in the last two overs and took the score to 176.
Chasing the target of 177 runs, Mumbai Champions were given a good start by Phil Mustard and debutant captain Virender Sehwag. In the powerplay the team scored 45 runs without any loss. Both of them made an opening partnership of 63 runs and after this Mustard was bowled by Monu Kumar in the 8th over. Unfortunately, Sehwag was run out in the very next over.
Then Abhishek Jhunjhunwala and Peter Trego took charge. From here both of them made an unbeaten partnership of 112 runs and took the team to victory. Jhunjhunwala hit 7 fours and 3 sixes in his brilliant innings. Whereas Trego hit 2 sixes and 2 fours.
After this win, Mumbai Champions team will face Rajasthan Legends on Friday. VVIP Uttar Pradesh team will face Chhattisgarh Warriors on Thursday.
