US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he will not contest the presidential election. Biden has withdrawn his candidacy. Along with this, he has supported Vice President Kamala Harris as the new candidate of the Democratic Party. Biden's decision came after the presidential debate with Republican rival and former President Donald Trump last month, after which some leaders of the Democratic Party were pressuring him to drop out of the presidential race.
Biden announced this through a post on X. Biden said he would address the nation this week and continue in his role as president and commander-in-chief until his term ends in January 2025.
Joe Biden wrote on social media, “Serving as your President has been the greatest honor of my life and I intend to run for re-election, but I believe it is best for my party and country that I should not contest the upcoming election and focus on fulfilling my duties for the remainder of my term as President.”
This decision of 81-year-old Biden comes four months before the US goes to polls on November 5. Biden endorses Kamala Harris After Biden refused to contest re-election, the way is now clear for Vice President Kamala Harris to run for president, the first black woman to do so in the country's history.
However, it is not yet clear whether other senior leaders of the Democratic Party will challenge Kamala Harris or the party will choose the nomination itself. Democratic Party leaders have been pressuring Biden to drop out of the race for several weeks after his poor performance in the presidential debate with his Republican rival and former President Donald Trump in late June.
