A 36-year-old man has become known as 'China's most stubborn man' after he repeatedly took exams for 16 years in an attempt to get into China's prestigious Tsinghua University.
Tang Shangjun took China's tough college entrance exam for the first time in 2009. He scored an average of 372 out of 750, far too low to get into his dream school, Tsinghua University. But he wasn't ready to enroll in any other college, so he stuck around to take the exam.
did not take admission in another university
By 2016, his score had reached a respectable 625 points, enough to get into several universities in his province, but he was adamant on his first choice so he continued his studies ignoring all other universities, hence he was never able to get admission with enough marks.
In 2019, Tang scored 649 out of 750, which would have gotten him into Tsinghua, but still not in the two subjects he was supposed to take admission in. These were physics and chemistry. Most candidates adjusted to the subjects given to them, but Tang still did not agree.
Know the result of stubbornness
In later years, as his results worsened, people began to suggest that his memory was weakening due to his advancing age, following which the director of the 21st Century Education Research Institute in China commented on the matter – 'It seems that getting into the country's top esteemed university is a great achievement that will help you lead a good life, but there are many ways to succeed in life. Being stubborn about a goal sometimes leads to miserable failure.
Did small jobs to help parents
Over the past 16 years, Tang Shanjun has worked odd jobs to support himself and his elderly parents. Now he realizes that he should give up his desire to enroll in university and look for a job, but it is unclear whether he will enroll in college again next year.
