Indian student death case: A police officer has been sacked for making insensitive comments and laughing after the death of an Indian student in the US. Jhanvi Kandula (23), a student of Northeastern University in Washington, was hit by a police vehicle while crossing the road on January 23. The vehicle was being driven by an officer named Kevin Dave.
He was driving fast to investigate another case. After hitting the car, Kandula fell 100 feet away. In the bodycam footage released by the Seattle Police Department, Officer Daniel Oderer can be heard laughing at the horrific accident and saying, “Oh, I think she came on the bonnet. She hit the front windshield and then when he (the driver of the police vehicle) hit the brakes, she fell off the car… she was already dead.”
The disciplinary action report states that Oderer laughed out loud for four seconds after making these insensitive comments. Seattle Police Department Acting Chief Sue Rahe said in an email that Oderer's comments cannot take away the pain felt by Kandula's family.
The actions of the police officer have brought shame to the Seattle Police Department and our entire profession. This has made the job of every police officer more difficult. Rah said that as the president of the organization, it is his duty to ensure that high standards are maintained to maintain public trust. He said, 'Keeping this officer in our force would be an insult to the entire department. That is why I am dismissing him.'
