Sixteen crew members of a Comoros-flagged oil tanker that sank off the coast of Oman are still missing, the country's Maritime Safety Centre said on Tuesday, a day after the sinking was reported. The oil tanker was heading to Yemen's Aden port. The Omani centre said in a post on social media platform X that the crew members of the Prestige Falcon include 13 Indian nationals and three Sri Lankans.
According to Reuters, the centre said the ship was still submerged and overturned. However, they did not confirm whether the ship had run aground or was leaking oil or oil products into the sea.
The tanker overturned near Duqm
Shipping data from LSEG showed the tanker was heading to Yemen's Aden port and capsized near Oman's main industrial port of Duqm. Shipping data showed the ship is a 117-meter-long oil product tanker built in 2007. Such small tankers are usually used for short sea voyages. Omani authorities, along with maritime authorities, carried out rescue and search operations at the scene, Oman's state news agency said late Monday.
The main port is Duqm
The Duqm port is located on Oman's southwestern coast. It is close to the Sultanate's major oil and gas mining projects, including a major oil refinery. It is part of the vast Duqm Industrial Zone which is Oman's largest single economic project.
