US Elections 2024: On Monday, July 15, former US President Donald Trump announced the name of the Republican Party's vice-presidential candidate. For this post, he has chosen Republican Senator JD Vance from Ohio. JD Vance has also been a critic of Trump, but later became an ally and has been campaigning with him for a long time.
What did Trump say?
“After much deliberation and considering the tremendous talents of many other people, I have decided that the most qualified person to serve as Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio,” Trump said.
The former president praised Vance's accomplishments, noting his resume includes serving in the Marine Corps and earning a degree from Yale Law School, where he was editor of the Law Journal and president of the Yale Law Veterans Association. He also wrote the best-selling book Hillbilly Elegy, which was made into a movie.
Who is JD Vance?
Born on August 2, 1984, in Middletown, Ohio, Vance was raised by his grandparents. He first served in the Iraq War before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps and enrolling at Ohio State University. He then graduated from Yale Law School.
He then gained fame with his 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which became a bestseller. His book recounts his upbringing in Middletown, Ohio, and the cultural and economic challenges faced by the white working class in the Rust Belt region.
Vance began his political career by winning the Republican nomination in Ohio in 2021. He defeated Democratic candidate Tim Ryan in the general election and was sworn into office in January 2023. Before entering politics, he worked as a venture capitalist in the tech industry. JD Vance also has ties to India. His wife Usha Vance is an American citizen of Indian origin.
He will break records by becoming the youngest Vice President!
If elected, Vance would be 40 when he was sworn in, making him one of the youngest vice presidents.
