Cape Canaveral: We are confident that we will return safely to Earth by the end of July 2024 on a Boeing Company space capsule.
US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) test pilot Butch Wilmore and Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams expressed such confidence while speaking to reporters from the International Space Station (ISS) on July 10, 2024.
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore addressed the first-ever news conference from the International Space Station orbiting 400 kilometers from Earth. Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore will travel to the ISS in June 2024 aboard Boeing's new Starliner capsule.
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore said that we should have actually returned to Earth weeks ago… yet due to a helium leak in Boeing's new Starliner capsule and technical problems in its thrusters, both of us were delayed in coming here to the ISS. Now both of us are stuck here in the ISS. However, once the scientific testing of the thrusters on Earth is done, we will return to Earth as soon as possible.
Both the astronauts enthusiastically said that we have no complaints about the delay in returning to Earth. We are having a lot of fun here on the ISS. We are also helping the crew members of the ISS.
NASA's Commercial Crew Program Director Steve Stich said that both astronauts will return safely to Earth by the end of July from Boeing Starliner. Sunita Williams and Butch Willimore will definitely return to Earth before SpaceX sends its second crew to space in mid-August 2024. However, this timetable may also change.
NASA and Boeing are trying to solve a technical problem with the Starliner's thrusters in Mexico this week. The actual technical problem is in the propulsion system. Whatever it is, all arrangements are being made to bring both astronauts back to Earth safely.
