After independence, there was a famine in India. India needed wheat. In such a situation, Pandit Nehru visited America in the year 1949 and asked for help. But his visit was unsuccessful. Because America refused to help India. After this, the Indian government turned to the Soviet Union. A formal agreement was reached on this in 1951. India was promised one lakh tons of wheat by the Soviet Union in exchange for the export of traditional Indian goods.
Indo-Soviet relations entered a new phase after Stalin's death in 1953. Soviet leaders recognised the importance of a strategic partnership with India. Nehru visited the Soviet Union in June 1955 at the invitation of Soviet Prime Minister Nikolai Bulganin and Soviet Communist Party General Secretary Nikita Khrushchev. The visit laid a strong foundation for relations between the two countries.
How are the relations between the two countries?
India and Russia have had strong defense relations for a long time and India has imported a variety of weapons and defense systems from Russia. Apart from this, India has also acquired a variety of radars and communication equipment from Russia, which enhance the capabilities of our army. All these weapons and defense systems have played an important role in enhancing the combat capability of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. This defense cooperation with Russia is very important for India's strategic security.

What weapons does Russia buy from India?
Russia buys relatively few weapons from India. Because Russia itself is a major arms producer and arms exporter. But there is an exchange of technical and defense cooperation between India and Russia. Russia and India have jointly developed the BrahMos missile. It is one of the fastest cruise missiles in the world and is used by the armed forces of both countries. Russia has acknowledged India's technical contribution to this project and also sees the possibility of adapting it to its needs. Apart from this, there is cooperation between India's Defense Research and Development Organization and the Russian Defense Research Institute on various projects. Under this cooperation, both countries benefit from each other's technical expertise.
