Hamirpur, June 26 (HS). On Wednesday afternoon, a truck driver hit a couple riding a bike from behind near the Betwa river bridge in Chandaut village of Jaria police station. Both died on the spot in the accident. After the incident, a large number of villagers from the village of the deceased got angry and blocked the road and had an altercation with the police. The police controlled the situation. The truck driver is absconding after the incident.
Ramakant alias Lalla Rajput (38), resident of Kahata village of Aata police station area of Jalaun district, was going to his in-laws' house in Kheda Shilajit village of Jaria police station area of Hamirpur district on a bike with his wife Geeta Devi (35). After crossing the Betwa river bridge, they had just reached near Dani Baba Ghat of Chandout Danda village of Jaria police station when a speeding truck driver coming from behind hit their bike hard. As soon as the collision took place, the bike came under the truck and the bike driver Ramakant was badly crushed under the wheels of the truck. He died on the spot, while his wife Geeta Devi was seriously injured. Meanwhile, the truck driver fled after getting the chance. Police sent the injured Geeta to Orai Medical College in an ambulance, where Geeta also died during treatment. Police took the truck into custody.
After getting the news of the incident, a large number of angry villagers from the village of the deceased couple, resident of Kahata village of Aata police station situated on the other side of the river, reached the spot and misbehaved with the police and tried to block the road and pelt stones. During this, the outpost in-charge and police personnel of Chandaut Danda, seeing the situation, called Jaria and Jalalpur police. The police reached the spot and dispersed the crowd by using force and sent the bodies for post-mortem. The police has denied the allegations of violence and stone pelting by the villagers.
