In mid-May, an electoral reform plan was discussed in French New Caledonia. After this, incidents of rioting and looting have started here. Since then, local Kanak people fear that they will be put into a permanent minority. Later, several buildings, including a police station and a town hall, were set on fire.
School and colleges were closed
France's New Caledonia is currently in turmoil. Several buildings, including a police station and a town hall, were set on fire last night on the island of New Caledonia. Officials said that nine people have died so far after these riots. Apart from this, arson and road blockades were also carried out and the police were targeted.
It is noteworthy that riots and looting broke out in New Caledonia in mid-May over the electoral reform plan. Local Kanak people fear that this new plan will make them a permanent minority. This will certainly put the hope of independence out of reach.
A police station and a garage caught fire
It is worth noting that the Doumbia police station and a garage north of the capital Noumea were set on fire. Meanwhile, after a lot of effort, four armored vehicles brought the situation under control and the situation returned to normal.
This is not the first time that a fire incident has taken place in New Caledonia. Apart from this, fire was also set in Doucos and Magenta districts of Noumea. Cars as well as private vehicles were set on fire in the police station premises. There is news of a clash between the police and the separatists in which one person was injured.
System order to keep schools closed
In view of this incident, the French government administration deployed more than three thousand soldiers and police about 17 thousand kilometers away from Paris. Also, orders have been given to close schools in violence-affected areas.
