Lucknow, June 13 (HS). State's Jalshakti Minister Swatantradev Singh said that the dream of reviving the Choti Gandak river is coming true on the initiative of the Irrigation Department. He said that when the work of restoration of the section of the river started, the groundwater level in the river has started coming in the process of giving it its original form.
Regarding Choti Gandak, the Jalshakti Minister said that the meandering groundwater based Choti Gandak river originates from Parsauni district Nawalparasi of Nepal nation and enters Laxmipur Khurd Gram Sabha district Maharajganj Uttar Pradesh in India nation. This river flows for a length of two hundred and fifty kilometers in Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Deoria districts and finally merges with Ghaghra river near Gothani of Siwan district of Bihar state.
Swatantradev Singh further said that after Chhoti Gandak entered India, its existence had almost ended in the initial ten kilometer length. Due to which agriculture work started being done in the river section which was completely silted and narrowed. Work has been done rapidly to revive this river.
The ground water level of Gurra river also increased
The irrigation department has reduced the slope of the Gurra river and maintained a continuous flow in the Rapti river during summers, thus benefiting a population of about sixty thousand and animals and birds in a total of thirty-three villages, including twenty-seven villages of Gorakhpur district and six villages of Deoria district, as well as increasing the ground water. A commendable job has been done to protect a population of thirty-five thousand in a total of twenty-six villages of Gorakhpur and Deoria by reducing the damage caused by floods from the Gurra river.
