Medical college trainee doctors staged a sit-in protest over honorarium

Varanasi, 07 June (HS). Trainee doctors of Heritage Institute of Medical Sciences located at Rohania Bhadwar staged a massive sit-in on Friday for their demands including honorarium. The college management was the target of the resident doctors who sat on the sit-in by closing the main gate of the college.

The medical students involved in the protest said that we have been doing internship here since 2019. The amount given to us by the government has been halved. Which is not even paid regularly. We are protesting against the injustice of low stipend. According to the trainee doctors, the 2019 batch is the first batch to get admission under the newly formed Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) course. According to this course, the newly passed graduates of the 2019 batch are 'Indian Medical Graduates'. Trainees are paid a minimum amount of Rs 5000 per month which is not in accordance with the instructions of the Uttar Pradesh Medical Council as well as the amount of dedicated work done by these trainees.

The trainee doctors said that the college administration has defended itself by saying that they cannot pay more money to the trainees. Our demand is that our current stipend should be increased from Rs 5000 per month to Rs 12000 per month as mandated by the government. More than 150 trainees participated in the protest.
