Pig kidney transplant failed in a woman! Doctors removed it after 47 days

In America, a pig kidney was transplanted after a woman's kidney failed, which attracted worldwide attention. Now, after about 47 days, doctors have removed the transplanted kidney and put the woman on kidney dialysis. Doctors say that the transplanted pig kidney failed due to lack of proper blood flow, after which it was decided to remove it. This was the second case of pig kidney transplant. Earlier, a pig kidney was transplanted into a man who died after 2 months.

Surgeons at the NYU Langone Transplant Institute in New York performed the feat of transplanting a pig kidney into the body of 54-year-old Lisa Pisano. The woman survived for 47 days with the transplanted kidney but after that the kidney started to deteriorate and had to be removed. The woman's body did not reject the kidney, but the heart pump did not provide enough blood flow, due to which it had to be transplanted. The woman's condition is currently said to be stable and her left ventricular assist device is working. The woman got this kidney from a genetically modified pig.

According to doctors, the woman's case was very complicated and her kidney and heart had failed. After this, she was given a heart pump and a pig's kidney was transplanted 8 days later. Lisa Pisano is the first patient in the world to undergo a kidney transplant after a heart pump. The first patient to receive a kidney from a genetically modified pig was 62-year-old Richard Sleeman, who was transplanted in Boston, USA in March 2024. He was facing serious illness and died 2 months after the kidney transplant.
