During an air show in Portugal on Sunday evening, two small Air Force planes collided in the air, leading to a tragic incident. The plane crashed on the ground. The accident happened at 4 pm on Sunday
The Air Force has issued a statement regarding the accident. In which they said that the Air Force is sad to inform that on Sunday, June 2, at 4:05 pm, there was an accident between two aircraft during the air display at the Beja Air Show. A Spanish citizen died. The other Portuguese pilot suffered minor injuries. Beja was given emergency treatment before being taken to the hospital.
Portuguese Defense Minister Nuno Melo called it a tragic accident and told reporters that an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the collision. At the same time, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that the air show of the Air Force in the sky was an exciting and happy moment. But due to the accident, it turned into temporary pain.
Cause of plane crash
The Air Force said that six aircraft were demonstrating their strength in the sky. The planes were flying in a V shape. Then one plane came down and started flying upwards. Meanwhile, the plane going upwards collided with a plane of the group. Due to the collision, the plane fell down from the sky. The Air Force said that the six aircraft belonged to an aerobatic group of Spanish and Portuguese pilots called Yak Stars. The aircraft involved was the Yakovlev Yak-52, a Soviet-designed aerobatic training model.
The Air Force said one of the planes crashed outside the airbase grounds and the other plane involved in the accident managed to land on the airport tarmac. Fortunately, no spectators were injured. According to information, the Yak Stars were participating along with about 30 other European aerobatic groups. The Air Force said that the organizers of the show at Beja Airport have canceled the event, which was scheduled to start on Saturday. The Air Force has expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased pilot.
