Chennai: Kolkata Knight Riders defeated defending IPL champions Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets, which can be called the most one-sided final of the entire IPL season. Hyderabad was all out in 18.3 overs. Kolkata achieved the target by losing 2 wickets in 10.3 overs. In this way, the match was completed in just 29 overs. This is also a record in the history of IPL. Kolkata won the championship and got Rs. 20 crore, while runner-up Hyderabad got Rs. 13 crore as prize money.
Hyderabad won the toss and batted first, but Starc took another valuable wicket by bowling Abhishek Sharma (2) on the fifth ball of the first over of the innings, Arora bowled the dangerous Travis Head on the last ball of the second over. Just before the close of play, wicketkeeper Gurbaz took another immediate breakthrough when he dismissed the in-form Rahul Tripathi, giving a simple catch at square leg. After losing three wickets for just 21 runs in 4.2 overs, Kolkata's Harshit Rana and Russell kept hold of their bowling and bowled out Hyderabad for 110 in 18.3 overs.
Hyderabad were rattled to such an extent that their highest run partnerships were 26 for the fourth wicket and then 23 for the ninth wicket.
Ninth number Cummins scored the highest 24 runs and second number Markram scored 20 runs. Hyderabad's 113 runs was the lowest final score in the history of IPL.
Presenting a target of 114 runs, Kolkata achieved the target at the loss of just two wickets in 10.3 overs without giving any chance to Hyderabad to create any excitement.
Venkatesh Iyer remained unbeaten on 52 off 26 balls with the help of 4 fours and 3 sixes. Openers Gurbaz (39) and Narayan (6) got two wickets each.
Skipper Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 6 runs and he managed to celebrate the memorable win with Venkatesh Iyer at the crease.
Looking at this IPL record, Kolkata played with enough consistency to become a champion. After being number one in the points table, they defeated Hyderabad by eight wickets in the first qualifier. Now they dominated in the final as well and won by eight wickets.
Kolkata managed to win its third title in 2024 after 2012, 2014 i.e. after ten years.
Hyderabad defeated Rajasthan in the eliminator.
Kolkata holds the record in IPL finals with nine wins, three losses and two rain-outs from 14 matches.
Australian fast bowler Starc was bought for Rs. 24.75 crore. He came under a lot of pressure due to his price when he proved to be very expensive in the opening match. He was even dropped in one match. But he contributed to the victory by taking three wickets in Qualifier One and two valuable wickets in the final and power play. Thus he appeared to be collecting money.
