New Delhi, May 27 (HS). West Indies suffered a major blow ahead of their T20 World Cup campaign when all-rounder Jason Holder was ruled out of the tournament due to injury.
Left-arm pacer Obed McCoy, who is playing the current series against South Africa, has been named as Holder's replacement.
Holder suffered the injury while playing for Worcestershire in the County Championship.
However, the Cricket West Indies release did not mention the nature of the injury or his recovery timeline.
Chief selector Desmond Haynes said, “Jason is an experienced player in our set-up. His absence will undoubtedly be felt both on and off the field. We hope to have Jason back to full fitness soon.”
He further added, “While it is unfortunate to lose a player of Jason’s caliber, we are confident in Obed McCoy’s abilities. Obed has shown remarkable skill and promise in his performances, and this opportunity will allow him to showcase his talents on the international stage. We believe he will bring a new and dynamic energy to the team.”
CWI has also named a pool of five reserve players from which a replacement player will be picked in case of an injury later in the squad. The T20 World Cup co-hosts and two-time champions will begin their campaign against Papua New Guinea on June 2.
West Indies squad is as follows: Rovman Powell (captain), Alzari Joseph (vice-captain), Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran, Shai Hope, Andre Russell, Romario Shepherd, Obed McCoy, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Moti, Sherfane Rutherford.
Reserves: Kyle Mayers, Matthew Forde, Fabian Allen, Hayden Walsh, Andre Fletcher.
